If you are reading this, chances are you are already a fan of low-tox cleaning products or you are interested in making a switch and don’t know where to start. If you are the second person, be sure to scroll down and join my newsletter so you get first access to my upcoming blog The Dirty Truth About Conventional Cleaning Products, launching in late June. Mainstream household cleaning ingredients are being glossed over as generally safe or even touted as the only effective way to cleanse surfaces of bacteria, viruses or mold. The truth is, cleaning shouldn’t strip away all the good with the bad. It is good to have a germs in the home. It helps strengthen the immune system and keeps our gut microbiome healthy. “A house with a more bacteria-rich environment is a healthier one” says Susan Lynch, a microbiologist at the University of California at San Francisco (source). The point is, when we are cleaning our homes it is important to preserve the healthy bacteria and remove only the harmful antigens that will attack our systems. These cleaning supplies can help you do that.

OnGuard vs Abode

What’s the Difference?

doTERRA now offers two different cleaning lines, so let me help you understand the difference.

The main difference lies within the oils used in each product. They both have effective cleaning properties, but they smell very different.

Abode Ingredients:

Distilled Lime, Litsea, Cassia, Lemon Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Arborvitae, Kochii Eucalyptus, Cilantro, Lavandin, and Lemon Myrtle essential oils.

Offers a cozy aroma that feels grounding and clean. This is my personal favorite aroma for cleaning surfaces, laundry and air freshener.

OnGuard Ingredients:

Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Rosemary Leaf/Flower essential oils.

Offers a warm and spicy aroma. This is a great way to introduce immune supporting oils in your body while you clean.

About The Abode Line

doTERRA launched the Abode home cleaning line in the fall of 2021. With the abode line, you can rest assured your cleaning and household products are what you’ve been looking for: natural, non-toxic, and effective. You're trading in parabens, formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors, PEGs, dyes, triclosan, synthetic fragrances or phthalates, silicones, petroleum-derived ingredients and propylene glycol for CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade essential oils and simple ingredients of the finest quality derived from mother nature.

The Abode is a line of natural home care and cleaning products that include multi-purpose surface cleaner, dishwasher pods, liquid dish soap, laundry pods, hand wash and hand lotion.

Abode 15mL Oil

  • Over 100 experiments with 36 different oils against 5 different strains of harmful bacteria

  • They found that using this combination eliminated the bacteria

  • This oil inspired the whole cleaning line! The powerful blend of oils is used to kill airborne bacteria, making it an effective diffuser blend for cleansing the air.

Abode All Purpose Cleaner

  • Concentrated, making it easier to ship and therefore less of an environmental impact.

  • Reduces single use plastic by using food grade aluminum that is sealed on the inside so no metal will leech into the product.

  • 75% of aluminum is infinity recyclable, whereas 90% of plastics are not recyclable and will outlive us.

  • Doterra is mindful and in the process of eliminating single use plastics and is working diligently to swap single use plastics in other products on their marketplace.

  • To use, pour entire contents of the small concentrate into a 10 oz glass bottle and fill with water.

Abode Dish Soap + Dishwasher Pods

  • Smells amazing!

  • Very effective at cleaning grease and tough residue.

  • All soaps leave a film on plates and you eat whatever is left on that plate. If you use toxic soap that means it is being absorbed into your skin and plates and eventually into your food.

  • Because of ingredients, these do not contribute to grey water waste.

  • Very effective at cleaning grease and tough residue.

  • Pods Only: made of PCR (post consumer resin) aka previously recycled plastics for integrity purpose.

  • Dishwash Soap Only: Packaged in food grade aluminum that is sealed on the inside so no metal will leech into the product. Not concentrated. Do not dilute with water.

Abode Laundry Pods

  • Smells amazing! So crisp and clean, but not overpowering.

  • No synthetics. Not going to negatively affect your respiratory system.

Abode Hand Soap + Hand Lotion

  • Scented with the Citrus Bloom Springtime Blend.

  • Provides the perfect closure to your daily cleaning rituals.

  • The foaming hand wash is sold as a concentrate in an aluminum bottle, with enough for two refills of the glass bottle.

Glass Containers

  • The line features beautiful, highly durable glass bottles with brushed metal pumps.

  • You buy them once and use the concentrates and refilling pouches to fill and refill them.

  • Reduces single-use plastics and more effective shipping.

  • Sold separately here.

  • Modular trays available here.

About The On Guard Line

On Guard is one of doTERRA’s first proprietary blends. It was originally designed to support our bodies immune system. It is used to shield us from bacteria, mold, and viruses. This blend’s protective properties, however, extend beyond our physical bodies. The blend is so effective at defending our bodies that the company expanded the line to household cleaning products. On Guard is quite literally the OG of doTERRA’s green cleaning initiative.

The On Guard collection consists of many immune supporting products, but for the purposes of this blog I will only be discussing the On Guard home cleaning products specifically. Those include multi-purpose surface cleaner concentrate, liquid laundry detergent, foaming hand wash and hand sanitizer.

OnGuard 15mL Oil

  • Experimental data suggests that the combination of oils in doTERRA’s On Guard may regulate many important pathways relevant to healthy inflammatory response, wound healing, cellular health, and immune response

  • Supports healthy immune and respiratory function

  • Powerful surface cleaner

  • Diffuse for an energizing and uplifting aroma

OnGuard Concentrate

  • Use as a multipurpose cleanser by simply adding the cleanser to water. Mix two tablespoons of doTERRA On Guard Cleaner Concentrate per 24 ounces of water. Combine the water and concentrate to a spray bottle for easy application on surfaces around the home

  • Can be used to clean floors, tile, toilets, sinks, hard surfaces, bathtubs + showers

  • Tough on stains - use as a spot cleaner for upholstery and clothing

  • Formula doesn’t include preservatives

  • Effective for cleaning dishes and cookware

OnGuard Liquid Laundry Soap

  • Works on a variety of washable fabrics at all temperatures and is color safe

  • Each bottle yields 64 loads of laundry

  • To Use: HE washers: ¼ cap (1 tbsp)

  • Powerful stain and odor remover

  • Stains: When trying to lift a stain from clothing, place a small amount of doTERRA On Guard Laundry Detergent directly on the stained area. Let the detergent sit on the clothing for 3-10 minutes, then, wash the garment as directed.

With particularly stubborn stains, you can re-apply the detergent before the clothing is dry, and then repeat the wash cycle. After you repeat the wash cycle, let the piece of clothing dry before applying additional stain treatment. Like with any stain remover, it is wise to test the detergent for colorfastness in a small area before treating.

On Guard Hand Wash

  • My personal favorite hand wash!! I even travel with this when possible.

  • Foaming hand wash (when used with a foaming pump dispenser)

  • The blend of essential oil nourish and cleanse the skin while cleansing. You are getting immune supporting benefits by simply washing your hands.

  • pH balanced to help protect the skin’s moisture barriers — keeping your hands from drying out after use. Whether you have sensitive skin or want a soap that won’t dry your hands out.

OnGuard Hand Mist Sanitizer + Wipes

  • Three options: hand mist, sanitizing wipes and single use sanitizing wipes. I keep the larger container of wipes in my car and the single use wipes in my diaper bag. The hand mist is in my purse and car at all times. The mist is my most used of the three!

  • All three are easy to toss in gym bag, purse, kids backpack. Safe to use on children any age.

  • The mist is infused with a natural apple extract, which naturally moisturizes your hands rather than leaving them dry like other sanitizers.

  • The sanitizing mist is the naturally derived ingredient USP Certified ethyl alcohol which gives the mist antiseptic properties to effectively cleanse hands and prevent the spread of bacteria.

Why DIY when we have clean ready made products?

There are many reason to make your own products, despite the variety of clean ready-made options out there. Whether it is more convenient for you, it provides a creative outlet, or you simply can’t find what you are looking for in the non-toxic marketplace, DIY will always fill the gap. Doing anything yourself will always remain a foundation for empowering you with decision making and education.

Here are the top three reasons most people prefer to DIY:

Cost Effective.

There is an initial investment to acquire all the ingredients for your products, but in the end it is far less expensive — and more environmentally sustainable. It is best to buy in bulk so you can make multiple batches. Great places to buy organic carrier oils are Mountain Rose Herbs or Banyan Botanicals. Oil Life and Share Oils have a plethora of glass containers, labels, recipe books and other DIY material. Of course, Amazon or Target will have anything you can’t find there.

Deeper Connection.

I strongly believe we learn best by doing. When we are put in a positions where we have to make our own solutions for our homes we are inherently going to develop a deeper understanding of the ingredients and their benefits and/or dangers. Being involved in every step of creating something makes you deeply connected to the end result. In the process we naturally begin to become more educated about each individual ingredient. While searching for a surface cleaning recipe you will discover the essential oils that most effectively disinfect and cleanse. When searching for a skin beauty recipe, you will learn what oils are most associated with healthy skin. It is a natural progression that gives you bite size education that sticks with you because you are so deeply involved in the process.

Transparency and Product Control.

Most people who choose to make DIY products do so because it offers them the ability to have full control over their ingredients. They are making conscious decisions based on strong beliefs and values surrounding non-toxic solutions. There is a lot of deceit in the world of natural or holistic solutions. We call this “Greenwashing” or “Greenmarketing”. I go more in depth on this in my upcoming blog, The Dirty Truth About Conventional Cleaning Products, launching later this month.
